HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior Amanda Huntoon led the Golden Eagles with 18 kills and 10 blocks to take a 3-2 (29-31, 30-23, 23-30, 30-28, 15-8) victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd volleyball team on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles' (12-10, 5-3 C-USA) defensive front put up a team total of 15 blocks. Huntoon and Nicole Rock captained the Southern Miss defense each had two solo blocks. The duo's 28 combined kills hit .382 and .562 respectively.
Marshall (14-9, 6-3 C-USA) had three players with 10 or more kills in the match. Kelly-Anne Billingy produced a season-high 35 kills, which led all players, and 11 digs to pick up her sixth double-double of 2006.
Stephanie Cahill also recorded her seventh double-double for the Herd, her first since Sept. 22, with 15 digs and 13 kills. The Herd's third player with double digit kills was Uche Ndubisi, who recorded 14 kills, a .310 attack percentage and three blocks.
Leading the way in blocks for the Herd was Chelsea Lazar with four. Senior Christin Bimberg recorded her fourth 60-plus assist match with 64 against the Golden Eagles.
Marshall will head home with a four-match homestand over the next two weekends. The Herd's next match will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. when the Houston Cougars visit the Cam Henderson Center for the Herd's second CSTV match of the season. Admission is free to the public.
