HUNTINGTON, W.VA. - Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner has announced his first schedule as head coach of the Thundering Herd, and it is one that is sure to challenge his squad. Four 2006 NCAA Tournament squads dot the slate, including College World Series participant Rice. Once again this season all 12 of the Herd's Conference USA home games will be contested at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity of our upcoming schedule," Waggoner said. "Our nonconference schedule will prepare us well for conference play, and Conference USA will be strong as always."
Marshall opens the season Feb. 16-18 at Charleston Southern, then returns to Huntington the following weekend and begins home play with its first-ever matchup against LaSalle in a three-game series. Marshall will play 16 of 17 games at home from Feb. 24-March 18 before a two-game road series March 20-21 at James Madison. In all, Marshall is scheduled to play 32 of its 56 regular-season games at home (20 in Huntington, 12 in Charleston).
The Herd opens Conference USA play March 23-25 in Charleston against Tulane, an NCAA tournament team last season. The following weekend, Marshall takes its first league road trip, traveling to Houston for a three-game set against Rice, a College World Series participant last season.
In conference play this season, Marshall will play host to Tulane, East Carolina (April 13-15), Houston (April 27-29) and UAB (May 11-13) while traveling to Rice, Memphis (April 20-22), Southern Miss (May 4-6) and UCF (May 18-20). Tulane, Houston, Rice and Southern Miss all played in the NCAA tournament last season.
The Conference USA tournament will be hosted May 23-27 by Tulane in New Orleans.
Marshall went 22-32 overall and 6-18 in Conference USA last season in its inaugural year in C-USA.
