DALLAS- The No. 17 SMU Mustangs proved to be too much for the Marshall University Thundering Herd women's soccer Friday night at Westcott Field. The Mustangs overpowered the Herd 3-0 in the Conference USA match.

"We played well tonight and I am proud of the effort the team turned in. We were very organized," head coach Chris Kane said.

SMU(13-2-1/6-0-0) held a slight lead, 1-0, over the Herd(5-8-1/1-5-0) at the half. Marshall gave up the single-goal in the 21st minute of play when Morgan Field put a soft one-time shot in the back of the net. Field was assisted by Olivia O'Rear.

The Mustangs dominated Marshall in all statistical categories, shots (13-1), shots on goal (8-0) and corner kicks (8-0) during the first half. Kassie Hollman notched the lone Marshall shot.

Marshall denied the Mustangs on a great scoring chance in the 67th minute. SMU was awarded a free kick exactly at the top of the 18 yard-box. Marshall set a wall and charged the ball immediately after it was tapped, forcing the kicker to try to go wide with her shot. Liz Orton was in great position to make the save, keeping the score at 1-0.

Despite its best efforts, Marshall could not hold SMU off much longer. The Mustangs' Kimber Bailey notched the second goal of the night off of an assist from Kristen Moran in the 80th minute.

In the last minute and thirty-eight seconds SMU's Kim Peabody tallied the final goal of the match off of passes from O'Rear and Carley Philips.

"After halftime we played really well. The team came out composed and ready to play. We were hurt by youthful mistakes, but we will keep on moving and come back strong on Sunday," Kane said. "The first goal was a soft goal, but the second was world class. The third goal was a result of a counter attack by SMU when we were trying to get a goal back in the last minutes."

Marshall tallied three shots in the second half to SMU's 11. In total, Marshall took four shots and SMU notched 24. Orton made eight saves in the match.

"We get the win over Tulsa and we are right back in it."

Marshall will play on Sunday at Tulsa in the last road match of the regular season.
