HUNTINGTON, W.Va - Kelly-Anne Billingy's 27 kills led the Marshall University Thundering Herd volleyball team to a 3-1 (20-30, 30-25, 30-22, 30-25) victory over the Memphis Tigers Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Memphis' (16-3, 3-2 C-USA) Laure Cote and her 11 assists and 4 kills helped the Tigers take the first game of the match from Marshall (12-8, 4-2 C-USA). The Tigers' defense at the net was tough to tame early on scoring on three blocks.

Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said with the spurring of some of the Herd's older players between the first and second game, the team came out and played with more zeal.

"I am really proud of them not getting down on themselves in game one," he said. "I heard a few of the older girls getting on to the team telling them to pick it up."

The Herd owned the final three games and sealed the match. Billingy along with three other Marshall players posted nine or more digs in the match. Scoring a double-double with 46 assists a team-high 14 digs was Christin Bimberg.

"Christin Bimberg was the biggest stepup of the night," Jacobs said. "She played defense first and worried about setting the ball afterward. I thought we looked like a smarter team tonight."

Joining the lone senior in double digit digs was Maggie Arias and Kristin Marcum with 12 each. Jacobs said Marcum played a very important match after settling down from the first game.

"Kristin Marcum struggled in game one and I told her between games one and two, `you're not coming out of this match,'" he said. "`We are with you for the duration.' She's a great passer and she realized they are going to serve her the entire match. It was outstanding that she stepped up and played the way she did. She just has to get comfortable out there and she did that for us."

Marshall will continue its home stand against UAB on Sunday. Jacobs said the team will be preparing for the Blazers.

"Time to look at Sunday at get the team pumped and ready," he said.

Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center and stats will be available on GameTracker at www.herdzone.com.
