HUNTINGTON - Despite setting several new season and career bests, the Marshall Thundering Herd was only able to knock off Duquesne, while falling to West Virginia and East Carolina Saturday at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.

The Herd (4-2) ran its all-time record to 3-0 against the Dukes (2-3) with a 187-101 win. ECU (7-1) defeated the Herd 212-88, while WVU (3-2) notched its first victories of the season. The Mountaineers upended Marshall 208-92.

"We set a lot of new season and career bests, but the other teams were a little quicker than us today," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "I thought we swam very strong and our top girls in each event did well.

"They were just a little deeper than we were when it mattered most. Now, we are going to focus on preparing for the Western Kentucky Invitational in two weeks."

Freshman Briana Burns (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) registered one of the Herd's two individual victories Saturday, winning the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 50.93. Junior school record-holder Michaela Sceli (LaSalle, Ontario/St. Thomas of Villanova) was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.67. Sceli later finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:25.29.

Fellow freshman Karli Alsop (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) finished third with a season-best time of 53.88. Alsop also set a season-best in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 2:00.43.

Junior co-captain Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) recorded a new season-best in the 1000-yard freestyle after her third-place performance (10:30.41). Co-captain Renee Lambert (Maryville, Tenn./William Blount) finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:11.46, followed by McIlvain in sixth (5:11.48).

Lauren Ford (St. Albans, W.Va./Nitro) recorded a season- and career-best time of 2:13.00 in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing seventh.

Freshman Julia Petzka (Muelheim, Germany/Riverton) finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:00.54, followed by teammate Erin Kennedy (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) in sixth place (1:00.86).

On the boards, sophomore Siobhan Schuurman (Edmonton, Alberta/Ross Sheppard) finished second in both the one- and three-meter events. In the one-meter boards, Schuurman set a season-best score of 227.75.

The Herd's 200-yard medley relay tandem of Petza, Sceli, Lambert and Kristin Wheatley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) finished sixth with a time of 1:52.51. Marshall's 200-yard freestyle relay of Burns, Lambert, McIlvain and Kyla Jungclaus (Brownstown, Ind./Seymour) also finished sixth (1:42.37).

The Marshall Thundering Herd will return to action in two weeks when it participates at the Western Kentucky Invitational Nov. 17-19 in Bowling Green, Ky.
