Sutton Claims Long Jump Title at WVU Holiday Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Teniqua Sutton led the Marshall University track and field team with her long jump of 18-2 ½ for first place in the event at the WVU Holiday Classic on Saturday, December 2. The meet marked the first for the Thundering Herd of the 2007 indoor season.
In field events, the Herd performed well, but was unable to claim first place in any other events.
In the women's shot put LaTricia Jones and Rachel Blankenship finished within a half inch of each other for third and fourth places. Jones earned third with her heave of 41-5 and Blankenship in fourth with a toss of 41-4 ½, respectively. Newcomers Cara Rumburg and Samantha Fetter showed no signs of first-meet jitters as they placed sixth and ninth in the 21 person event.
Britani Burke earned second place in the weight throw with her hurl of 47-8. Jones finished in third with her throw of 47 ½. Blankenship, Molly Grove and Fetter placed eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.
Sutton also led the team in the high jump with her leap of 4-11 ¾ for seventh place. Quinnyana Brown and Lindsay Abshire tied for 10th place and Andrea Jackson rounded out the Marshall participants in 18th.
Brown also participated in the long jump and finished 11th.
Marshall's sprinters advanced into the finals of the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. Angelica Harris sprinted to a fifth place finish in the 60-meter dash with her time of 7.99 seconds. Breanna Jones came in eighth when she recorded a time of 8.13.
Rolanda Bruce and B. Jones finished 10th and 12th in the 60-meter hurdle finals.
The 4x400m relay team of Sutton, Bruce, Harris and B. Jones claimed fourth place with a time of 4:13.01.
Marshall will not run again until January 12-13 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
