HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall baseball team opens its 2006 season this weekend, traveling to Nashville to take on Belmont in a four-game series at Greer Stadium (10,139).

The teams play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday, then square off in one game at 3 p.m. Saturday before concluding the series with a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday. Please note the schedule has changed, as the doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up because of the possibility of inclement weather Saturday.

Marshall returns 24 of 31 letterwinners from the 2005 season. The Herd also returns all but two pitchers from the 2005 staff. The Herd hurlers are led by first-year assistant coach Rick Reed, a 17-year professional baseball veteran and two-time National League All-Star.

Several Herd players are poised for big seasons, led by senior third baseman Adam Frederick (Franklin, Pa.), who is just 28 hits shy of the all-time Marshall hits record of 208. Frederick also enters the year sixth on the at bats chart with 537 and needs 93 to tie for first place. He also is just outside the Top 10 in games played, runs scored, doubles and total bases.

With 39 career starts, Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) needs six more starts to match the all-time pitching games started record. He also stands fifth in innings pitched (238.1) and needs 61.2 innings to move into the top spot. Koutsavlis is ninth in wins (12) and needs seven to tie for first. He is just outside the Top 10 in appearances and strikeouts.

Chris Cummings (Huntington, W.Va.) stands 10th in pitching appearances with 46 and also needs 52 strikeouts to move into the Top 10. Chris Monaco (Tucson, Ariz.) holds third place in stolen bases (42) and is 17 shy of the top spot.

The 2006 season also marks Marshall's first in Conference USA, which is regularly one of the top baseball conferences in the nation.

Marshall and Belmont have squared off in just one series all-time, with the Bruins sweeping the Herd by 3-1, 9-8 and 4-3 decisions in 2004 in Nashville.
