HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall baseball team (1-1) returns to action this weekend, traveling to Statesboro, Ga., to battle the Georgia Southern Eagles (4-5) at J.I. Clements Stadium (3,000). The teams face off at 7 p.m. Friday, then play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The games will be broadcast online at www.enia.net/broadcast.
Marshall comes off a split of a doubleheader last Friday at Belmont. The Herd lost the first game, 7-3, before rallying to take the nightcap, 7-5. Richard Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) paced the Herd offense in the doubleheader with a 2-for-5 performance, and he was hit by three pitches. Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) went 2-for-6 in the twinbill with two sacrifice flies and three RBI.
On the mound, Brian Chrisman (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) started the second game and was solid, going 4.2 innings while allowing just two runs and three hits with nine strikeouts as he earned the win. Jeremy Slone (Jr., Paintsville, Ky.) was the starter in game one and fired 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.
Georgia Southern comes in after having its three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 5-2 home loss to Jacksonville. The Eagles swept a three-game series from St. Joseph's over the weekend.
Marshall and Georgia Southern, former competitors in the Southern Conference, have not met since a three-game league series in 1997, which the Eagles swept in Statesboro. Georgia Southern leads the series, 12-2.
