HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Coming off a tough loss that went down to the wire at Kentucky, the Marshall baseball team (4-6) returns home to University Heights Field to battle Niagara (3-8) at noon Saturday for a doubleheader and then for a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The games will be broadcast by WMUL 88.1 FM and online at www.marshall.edu/wmul. WRVC 92.7 FM will carry the Sunday contest.
The Herd continues to be paced offensively by Rich Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario), who leads Conference USA in hitting with a .467 batting average and is riding a 10-game hitting streak. Marshall also boasts the defending C-USA Hitter of the Week in Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.), who hit three home runs and drove in a dozen runs last weekend against Buffalo. Roddy Stieger (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) has been hot lately with hits in his last nine games while posting a .368 batting average for the season.
Niagara enters the weekend with a 3-8 record after dropping both ends of a doubleheader (9-2, 17-4) Tuesday at West Virginia. Mike Alati leads the team in hitting with a .395 batting average and seven RBI. Andrew MacNevin is second in hitting at .333 and leads the team with two home runs. On the basepaths, Jeff Vincent is 9-for-10 in stolen bases. Mike Radanovic has been the Purple Eagles' top starter thus far, going 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA. Last Saturday he tossed a complete-game shutout at Cincinnati.
Marshall leads the all-time series with Niagara, 3-0, after sweeping a three-game set in Huntington in 2004.
