Marshall Baseball Wraps Up Homestand With Series vs. Cleveland State

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall baseball team (5-7) kicks off spring break with a three-game series against Cleveland State (1-8) this weekend at University Heights Field. The teams play at 2 p.m. Friday, then play 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday. The series will be broadcast by WMUL 88.1 FM and online at www.marshall.edu/wmul. WRVC 92.7 FM will air the Sunday contest.
Brit Vincent (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.) and Brent Mason (Sr., Sherwood, Ark.) were Marshall's two top hitters last week. Mason went 6-for-8 (.750), including his first career four-hit game and home run in the first game vs. Niagara. Vincent went 8-for-11 (.727) last week, including three-hit games in both ends of the doubleheader.
Roddy Stieger (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) continues to hit well, taking a career-best 11-game hitting streak in this weekend. Rich Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) continues to torch opposing hitting, batting .429 while posting a gaudy .714 slugging percentage and .611 on base percentage. Coming into the week, he led Conference USA in all three categories.
Chris Koutsavlis (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been consistent on the mound, notching a 2.89 ERA while posting a 2-1 record this year. He posted Marshall's first complete game of the season Monday against Niagara.
Marshall hit .419 as a team in the three games over the last week, and eight players had batting averages over .300 for the week, led by Mason and Vincent at .750 and .727, respectively. Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.) (.571), Matt Helm (So., Downingtown, Pa.) (.500) and Aaron Levinson (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) (.455) also hit over .400 for the week.
Marshall leads the all-time series, 13-8, after taking two of three from the Vikings in 2004 in Huntington.
Marshall opens Conference USA play next weekend at Houston.
