Athens, Ga. - The Marshall tennis team gave a competitive effort against No. 24 ranked Georgia, but the Bulldogs proved to be too strong as they came away with a 6-1 win over the Herd at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Marshall falls to 11-5 on the year and Georgia improves to 7-6 with the win.
Georgia jumped out to take an early edge in the matches as it swept the doubles point, but not without a fight from Marshall. Shannon Brown and Karolina Soor jumped out to take a 5-1 lead on court two but ended up losing 8-6 to the No. 58 ranked team of Evgenia Subbotina and Darya Ivanov. Marshall's Kellie Schmitt and Lynzee Kever would also put up a strong showing against the No. 8 ranked duo of Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson. Kever and Schmitt fought to tie the match at 6-6, proving they could play with the best in the nation, but would drop the next two games to lose 8-6.
Natalie Frazier and Kelly Hyndman picked up an 8-3 win over Jessica Keener and Jeanne Schwartz at No. 3 for the Bulldogs to round out the doubles sweep.
In singles, the Bulldogs would continue to show why they are ranked No. 24 and were once ranked in the top 10.
On court one, No. 22 ranked Frazier defeated Kever 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match. At No. 2, it was No. 67 ranked Robinson prevailing over Schmitt despite a great effort by the Herd freshman. After dropping the first set 6-1, Schmitt came right back and took the second 6-3 over Robinson and was looking in control. However, with the match sealed for Georgia, the two players played a ten-point tiebreaker for the third set in which Robinson would come out the victor, 10-6.
Georgia also got a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brown at No. 4 and Ivanov would claw back after falling behind 5-0 to Soor to win the match 7-5, 6-0. Hyndman rounded out the wins for UGA with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Keener from the No. 6 position.
Marshall got its lone win on the day behind a sharp performance from Schwartz on court three. The sophomore outplayed Subbotina for a 6-4, 6-3 win to get the Herd on the board.
The No. 66 ranked Herd will be back in action on March 19 at Florida Atlantic as it heads to the Sunshine State for its Spring Break trip when it faces FAU and No. 44 ranked Denver.
