WEST POINT, Miss. - The Marshall men's golf team travels to Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., to take part in its first Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The tournament is set for April 24-26.
The Herd, who placed third in the Marshall Invitational on April 7-8, and fourth in its most recent outing at Ohio State's Kepler Intercollegiate, has been playing well of late and hopes to carry the momentum over to the C-USA championship.
"We've had two strong showings our last two times out," said Marshall head coach Joe Feaganes. "We had a third place finish at the Marshall Invitational, and one of our most significant finishes in several years at the Kepler Intercollegiate when we finished fourth. and beat several nationally ranked teams in Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Penn State. The confidence factor has grown in the last two weeks, and we hope to have it carry over this week at the C-USA Championship."
The task will be tall for the Herd, who will face one of the top golf conferences in the country. Seven Conference USA teams are currently ranked in the top 100, with the University of Tulsa being the league's highest ranked team at 26th, according to GolfStat.com.
Junior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) leads Marshall into the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship with a stroke average of 73.33. He has three consecutive top ten finishes, including a tie for ninth at the Kepler Intercollegiate. Sophomore Trent Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.), who was the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week for April 12-19, will also compete for the Thundering Herd. Other Herd participants are Matt Scytkowski (South Hadley, Mass.), Jonathan Pepe (McKeesport, Pa.), and Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.).
