HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Coming off its first Conference USA victory, the Marshall baseball team (11-13, 1-5 C-USA) returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday against a familiar foe, the Ohio Bobcats (8-11, 2-4 MAC), at Bob Wren Stadium (4,000) in Athens, Ohio. The former Mid-American Conference rivals will meet for the 145th time. The game will be broadcast by WMUL 88.1 FM and online at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
The Thundering Herd comes off an exciting 6-5 victory over UCF Sunday. The Herd scored three in the eighth on a two-run double by Brent Mason (Sr., Sherwood, Ark.) and an RBI single by Chris Monaco (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) to overcome the Golden Knights and win the first Conference USA game in Marshall history.
Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.) needs just one hit to tie the all-time Marshall hits record of 208, set by David Colangelo (1999-02). He had a single in the first inning Sunday, but then went hitless in his final four opportunities at the plate. The senior third baseman also is just 12 at bats shy of matching Colangelo's all-time at bats record of 630.
The Marshall offense continues to sit atop Conference USA in batting average. The Thundering Herd is hitting .311 overall. Memphis and Southern Miss are tied for second at .307. Marshall also is second in the conference in slugging percentage (.477) and on base percentage (.395) behind only Southern Miss.
Ohio holds a 105-38-1 advantage in the all-time series with Marshall. MU has faced Ohio more than any other opponent. Morehead State is second on the list with 122 meetings.
Ohio dropped two of three at Toledo last weekend and comes into the game Tuesday with an 8-11 record and 2-4 mark in MAC play. Anthony Gressick leads the Bobcats offensively with a .372 batting average, three home runs and 15 runs batted in. Ohio is hitting .283 as a team and has a 5.91 team ERA.
On the mound, Yale Silverman has a team-best 2.22 ERA in 24.1 innings of work. The Bobcats are led by longtime mentor Joe Carbone, who is 519-422-2 in his 18 years at Ohio.
Marshall returns to Conference USA action at 2 p.m. Friday, playing host to Memphis at Appalachian Power Park. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the single-A West Virginia Power. Tickets for all Conference USA games at Appalachian Power Park are on sale now by calling 1-800-THE-HERD or logging on to www.herdzone.com. One ticket is good for admission to both games.
