Marshall Baseball Takes on Memphis in Teams' First-Ever Series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall baseball team (12-13, 1-5 C-USA) gets back into Conference USA play this weekend, taking on Memphis (16-13, 3-3) Friday through Sunday at Appalachian Power Park (4,500) in Charleston, W.Va. The teams compete for the first time ever at 2 p.m. Friday, then play a 2 p.m. game Saturday before wrapping up the series at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The games will be broadcast by WMUL 88.1 FM and will be streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul. WRVC 930 AM will carry the Saturday contest.
Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.) shattered the all-time Marshall hits record on Tuesday night. Frederick came into the game one hit shy of the record of 208, set by David Colangelo (1999-02), and wasted no time taking over the mark, as he hit an opposite-field single in the first inning to tie the record, then singled to right field in the second to break it. The senior third baseman enters the weekend just seven at bats shy of matching Colangelo's all-time at bats record of 630.
The Herd comes in after an 8-6 win at Ohio on Tuesday. Frederick went 4-for-5, while Rich Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) went 3-for-5 and fell a triple shy of the cycle while hitting a three-run home run and driving in four runs for Marshall.
In his first outing of the season after an injury, Chris Cummings (Sr., Huntington, W.Va.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief to win his first game of the season. Brian Knippelmeyer (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save.
The Marshall offense continues to sit atop Conference USA in batting average. The Thundering Herd is hitting .314 overall. Southern Miss is second in batting average at .308. Marshall also is second in the conference in slugging percentage (.479) behind Southern Miss and third in on base percentage (.396).
Memphis comes in with wins in four of its last five games and a 16-13 overall record and 3-3 mark in Conference USA after winning at UT-Martin 5-4 in 11 innings Wednesday. The Tigers boast the league's leading hitter, Adam Amar, who brings in a .398 batting average along with four home runs and 28 RBI. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .304, third-best in the league.
Memphis has a 5.53 ERA as a team, led by Drew Jaudon's 3.24 mark out of the bullpen. Scott McGregor is the Tigers' top starter with a 3-2 mark and 5.07 ERA and is 2-0 with two complete games thus far on Friday nights in C-USA play.
All three games this weekend are part of doubleheaders with the West Virginia Power. One ticket is good for both games.
