HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall designated hitter Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) has been honored as a Second Team All-Conference USA baseball selection, the league office announced today. Murphy is Marshall's first all-conference honoree since Jason Brooks earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference distinction in 2001.
Murphy has a team-high 15 home runs and 70 RBI this year. His RBI mark is the second most for a Marshall player in a single season, behind only Brooks' record of 73 in 2001. He also is batting .321 with 63 hits.
Murphy ranks among the top six in Conference USA in RBI (70, first), home runs (15, third), slugging percentage (.658, fourth), doubles (19, fifth) and total bases (129, sixth).
Tulane first baseman Mark Hamilton was named the conference player of the year, while teammate Warren McFadden earned freshman of the year laurels. Houston's Brad Lincoln nabbed pitcher of the year honors, and Rice head coach Wayne Graham was tabbed as the Keith LeClair coach of the year.
Marshall, the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament, opens its first Conference USA Championship with a 1:30 p.m. contest Wednesday against second-seeded Houston.
