Marshall returns to Joan C. Edwards Stadium for the 2006 home opener with the Pride of Hofstra on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. and the game will not be televised. Live video of the contest will be available to subscribers through Herd All-Access on-line at www.HerdZone.com.
This will be the third meeting all-time between the two schools and Marshall owns a 2-0 advantage in the series. The two schools met in 1995 and 2003 with both games being played in Huntington.
At Halftime, the world debut of the We Are Marshall movie trailers will be shown on the Joan C. Edwards Stadium video board. Director McG will be in attendance at the game to help unveil the trailers (totaling three minutes and 30 seconds in length).
McG is also going to take part in a new pre-game tradition, by leading the "We Are...Marshall!" cheer as the Thundering Herd takes the field.
Season tickets are still on sale and the 2006 totals are nearing a school record. Through Tuesday the Marshall ticket office had already sold 13,590 season tickets. The all-time MU record for season ticket sales (13,818) was set in 2000.
The Thundering Herd opened the season last Saturday with a 42-10 loss at fifth-ranked West Virginia in the first Friends of Coal Bowl, while Hofstra is coming off of a 17-8 win at Stony Brook last Thursday night.
WVU's Steve Slaton rushed for a game-high 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead a Mountaineer rushing attack that posted 312 yards on the day. The Thundering Herd's Ahmad Bradshaw managed to rush for 70 yards and added 25 receiving yards on three receptions against a Mountaineer team that boasted a top 15 scoring defense from one year ago.
Marshall junior quarterback Bernard Morris completed 12-of-22 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown with only one interception. He connected on a 21-yard scoring strike to Matt Morris in the second quarter. Matt Morris led the Herd receivers with three catches for 63 yards and the touchdown.
Defensively, Marshall was led by sophomore defensive end Albert McClellan who was credited with nine tackles on the day, including one for a loss. Linebackers Matt Couch and Josh Johnson both added eight stops against the Mountaineers.
Pride senior quarterback Anton Clarkson led the Hofstra attack by completing 19-of-31 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown in the win over Stony Brook. His top target was Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week, Shaine Smith. The six-foot-three wide receiver hauled in 12 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown against Stony Brook.
