Thundering Herd Pick Up First Conference Win

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Markel Humphrey had 20 points and hit five of seven free throws, two of them in the final 1:52 as Marshall held off Tulane, 79-73, Saturday night.
Travis Aikens and Mark Dorris added 13 points each for Marshall (6-11, 1-3 Conference USA), and Tre Whitted had 10.
The Thundering Herd led nearly all of the first half and stretched a 39-26 halftime lead to 15 points on a layup at 19:25 by Jean F. Bro Grebe.
But four of the game's five ties were in the last 5:15.
Chris Moore got 13 of his 18 points for Tulane (8-7, 1-2) in the second half, nine of them on 3-point shots, and Donnie Stith had 14 of his 16 points in that half. Stith also had 9 rebounds for the game.
One of Moore's 3-pointers put Tulane ahead 46-44 at 13:32. The Green Wave led until 6:33, when Chris Ross hit a layup and a free throw for a 62-60 Marshall lead. The final tie was 69-69 on a layup by Stith with 2:29 left.
Chris Ross hit one of two free throws to put Marshall ahead for good. Whitted added a 3-point shot and a jumper to put Marshall up 75-71. The rest of Marshall's scoring was on free throws.
