HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University senior outside hitters Kelly-Anne Billingy and Stephanie Cahill registered a combined 41 kills, but UAB was able to fight off the Herd's late-match surge and hold on for a 3-2 (27-30, 28-30, 30-26, 30-26, 13-15) win in Friday night's Conference USA CSTV match at the Henderson Center.

With the loss, Marshall has its seven-match win streak snapped and falls to 13-8 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

UAB advances its winning streak to seven matches and improves to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in C-USA.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Herd stormed back with a pair of 30-26 victories in the third and fourth games before falling to the Blazers in the deciding frame, 15-13.

"We are obviously disappointed in the outcome," head coach Mitch Jacobs said following the loss. "I am proud of the girls for climbing out of an 0-2 hole and forcing a fifth game. We had a 13-12 lead and they called a timeout and we just didn't make the plays."

In the final frame, the Blazers jumped to an early 5-1 lead before the Herd answered with four consecutive points thanks to two Billingy kills and a pair of block assists by junior middle hitter Jalicia Ross, who teamed with freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming and Billingy to help even the game at five. From there the team fought to a 12-12 tie before UAB was able to pull away to the victory.

Cahill registered her 10th double-double of the season adding 13 digs to 20 kills. Senior middle hitter Uche Ndubisi tallied 13 kills in the match and had five block assists, while Ross finished the match with 16 kills and contributed a solo block and six assisted blocks.

Senior libero Maggie Arias recorded 19 digs while sophomore outside hitter Kristin Marcum dug 14 in the losing effort for the Herd.

Freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming finished with 59 assists on the night and the Herd ended the night with 74 total kills, one shy of the season-high mark.

The Thundering Herd returns to action Sunday, Oct. 14 when it hosts Memphis in the fourth match of a five-match home-stand. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center and admission is free.
