BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The Marshall University men's golf team concluded its fall season with an 11th-place finish at the Belmont Fall Shootout at the par-72, 7,043-yard Nashville Golf and Athletic Club on Tuesday. Sophomore Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) was the Thundering Herd's top player at the 54-hole event, posting a score of 223 (76-70-77) to finish in a tie for 22nd place.
Marshall's team score of 911 (309-299-303) was its highest of the fall season, but the majority of the event was played in high winds and wet conditions. Akron (871) won the team title with Cleveland State and Northern Illinois (881) holding on for second place.
Austin Peay's Grant Leaver claimed medalist honors after winning a three-man playoff with Kyle Henderson of Florida Gulf Coast and Nathan Sutherland of Miami (Ohio). The trio finished with matching 54-hole totals of 215 (-1). Leaver birdied the first playoff hole for the victory.
Campbell's Fredric Sundberg also finished at 215, but was unable to participate in the playoff due to travel.
Marshall sophomore Phil DiLorenzo (Wellsburg, W.Va.) recorded a 227 (73-78-76) in his first event of the fall season, good enough for a tie for 38th place. Junior Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.) placed in a tie for 46th after consecutive rounds of 74 to close the 12-team, 68-player event.
The Herd will return to tournament competition in the spring at the RoadRunner Intercollegiate in San Antonio in mid February.
