HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University Baseball team will host its second annual Spring Training Banquet, Jan. 24 in the Don Morris Room of the Marshall Student Center starting at 7 p.m.

This year's guest speaker will be 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell.

Farrell's professional playing career began when he was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 1984 First-Year Player Draft after an outstanding career at 4.56 ERA in 116 major league games that included Oklahoma State University. His major league career resulted in a 36-46 record with stints in the Indians, Angels and Tigers organizations.

After his retirement as an active player, he served as an assistant coach/pitching and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State from 1997-2001. During his time there, he completed his bachelor's degree in 1996. Farrell was a member of the Cowboy's when they made their most recent appearance in Omaha, Neb. At the College World Series in 1999. He also mentored 14 pitchers that were drafted or signed as non-drafted free agents at the professional level, including right-hander Scott Williamson, who earned National League Rookie of the Year honors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1999.

Since 2001, he has served as the Cleveland Indians Director of Player Development. Under Farrell's tutelage, the Indians were named "Organization of the Year" in consecutive seasons (2003-04) by USA Today's Sports Weekly, and were named by Baseball America as having the number one farm system in professional baseball in 2003.
