CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Marshall baseball team used a stellar starting pitching effort from Adam Dobies (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) to earn a 2-1 win over Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon at Collins Park in Charleston, S.C. The win also gives Marshall a 2-1 series win.

Dobies (1-0) was spectacular in his first start of 2007, tossing a career-best 6 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run, nine hits and one walk. He also struck out three. Nick Wolle (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) fired the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four to earn his second save in as many days.

D.J. Throneburg (1-1) was equally impressive on the mound for Charleston Southern (5-3), going seven innings while giving up two earned runs, seven hits and four walks. He struck out five.

Brit Vincent (Sr., Bowling Green, Ky.) led the Thundering Herd bats with a 3-for-5 performance. Mason Chapman (Fr., Barboursville, W.Va.) and Tommy Johnson (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) each added two hits.

Charleston Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Herzog.

Marshall (2-1) knotted the score in the fifth inning. Matt Helm (Jr., Downingtown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved to second on a Chapman sacrifice bunt. Helm took third on the play when Charleston Southern failed to cover the base and could not get back in time to tag him. Vincent then grounded out to bring home Helm.

Marshall used a two-out rally in the seventh inning to move ahead for good. Chapman (single), Vincent (single) and Brendan Murphy (Sr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) (walk) loaded the bases, and Jeff Rowley (Jr., Buffalo, N.Y.) drew a walk to force in Chapman and push Marshall to a 2-1 lead.

Marshall returns home next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders with LaSalle. The action begins at noon Saturday.
