HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team will play host to 2006 NCAA Tournament participants SMU and UAB as well as its first in-season tournament since 1987 as part of the 2007 schedule, announced Monday by head coach Bob Gray.
"Considering nine home games, the strength of Conference USA games and our out of conference schedule, we are extremely excited about next fall," Gray said. "With many games this past fall not played in Huntington, we are pleased to bring so many games to the city. We also are fortunate to host our own tournament with some very good teams.
"Our out of conference games will only prepare us for our tough C-USA games. Every match we play in C-USA is a highly competitive game, and we look forward to improving on last year's finish."
Marshall opens at the JMU Invitational August 31 and Sept. 2 in Harrisonburg, Va., battling host James Madison as well as Georgetown. After the home opener Sept. 9 against Louisville, the Thundering Herd travels to the Western Kentucky Invitational Sept. 14 and 16 to take on Belmont and Centenary, respectively.
For the first time since the 1987 Marshall Invitational, Marshall will play host to an in-season tournament. Xavier, Western Kentucky and High Point will visit Huntington Sept. 21 and 23 for the Marshall Classic at Sam Hood Field. Marshall plays Xavier in a Friday night tilt before matching up with Western Kentucky in a Sunday afternoon contest.
Marshall begins Conference USA play Sept. 28 at Florida International, and two days later will play again in Florida, a non-conference match at Florida Atlantic.
After a non-league contest Oct. 6 at Liberty, Marshall jumps back into league play with three-consecutive home matches. Marshall plays 2006 NCAA Tournament teams SMU and UAB Oct. 13 and 20, respectively, with a match against Memphis sandwiched in between on Oct. 17.
The Thundering Herd then has conference road matches at Kentucky (Oct. 24) and South Carolina (Oct. 27) before returning home Nov. 3 for the home finale with Tulsa. Marshall wraps up the regular season Nov. 9 at UCF, then treks to Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 14-18 for the Conference USA tournament.
Marshall went 4-10-3 overall and 1-6-1 in Conference USA last season.
