Baseball Sweeps Buffalo with 9-3 Win

EAST BANK, W.Va. - After scoring two total runs in its last two games, the Marshall baseball team exploded for nine runs and a dozen hits in a 9-3 win over Buffalo Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Epling Field. Marshall swept the four-game series - the Thundering Herd's first four-game series sweep since a 1975 four-game sweep of Dayton.
"Our pitching and defense did a great job this weekend," Marshall head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "They played hard every game, and we did the little things well. It is great to pick up four wins."
Ryan Kiel (So., Los Gatos, Calif.) threw five innings to earn the win and move to 2-0 this season. He gave up two runs, two hits and two walks while striking out three. James Flatley (1-1) started for Buffalo (1-6) and earned the loss. He went three innings and gave up five runs, six hits and one walk while striking out one.
Blake Sanders (Fr., Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led the Herd offense with a 3-for-4 outing, including his first career hits and RBI. Mason Chapman (Fr., Barboursville, W.Va.), Brit Vincent (Sr., Bowling Green, Ky.) and Tommy Johnson (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) each added two hits.
Buffalo ended its 24-inning scoreless streak against the Herd with a run in the opening frame on a Jacob Rosenbeck RBI single, but Marshall quickly answered in the bottom of the first when Mason Chapman (Fr., Barboursville, W.Va.) scored on a Flatley balk.
The Bulls charged back ahead in the second on a Devin Greeno sacrifice fly, but Marshall again responded - this time with a three-run inning to take the lead for good. Aaron Jamieson (Sr., Lindsay, Ontario) scored the first run on a Buffalo error. Chapman then doubled in Matt Helm (Jr., Downingtown, Pa.), and Vincent plated Chapman with a single to center.
The Herd expanded the lead to three, 5-2, in the third on a Sanders single which scored Johnson. Marshall added another run in the fifth when Helm scored on a Buffalo field error.
Buffalo cut the lead to 6-3 in the sixth on a Jacob Rosenbeck RBI single, but Marshall came back with three in the bottom of the frame to put the game away.
Marshall travels to Morehead State Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game.
