RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings and never looked back en route to a 14-3 win over the Marshall University baseball team on Tuesday at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Colonels (15-16-1) recorded 19 hits in the game, a Marshall opponent-high this season, sending the Thundering Herd (14-20) to its 15th straight loss while snapping its own four-game skid. The win also stopped a three-game Herd win streak in the all-time series with EKU.
Eastern Kentucky's Tony Wells and Matt Davis hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to kick start the Colonels offense early. Four first-inning runs were followed by three in the second - fueled by Wells' second two-run shot of the game in his next at bat.
Marshall right-hander Adam Kuhr (Mason, Ohio) replaced Herd starter Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to start the third inning. The junior slowed down the surging EKU bats, allowing just one run on one hit through the next three innings.
After Marshall cut its deficit to 8-3 in the top of the sixth with a pair of RBI from Jeff Rowley (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Thad Ledford (Yukon, Okla.), EKU plated four runners in the bottom of the inning to seize a 12-3 edge. The Colonels scored four runs on four hits in the frame, sending nine hitters to the plate.
EKU added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the final 14-3 margin.
Davis went 5-for-5 from the plate with three RBI, with Wells going 4-for-5 with four RBI for the Colonels. Right fielder Shawn Flora and third baseman Lucas Waters added two RBI apiece. Lucas and Wells each scored four runs.
Marshall's Brit Vincent (Bowling Green, Ky.) went 2-for-4, as did Rowley and center fielder Nick Damas (Willow Springs, Ill.). Ledford drove in two runs in his 1-for-3 afternoon.
Dobies (2-5) lost his fifth consecutive start after two innings pitched with seven earned runs on nine hits. EKU starter Chris Grider pitched six innings and surrendered eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five to move to 4-3 on the season.
Marshall will return to Conference USA play at Memphis for a three-game series with the Tigers this weekend at Nat Buring Stadium.
