Southern Miss took game two of a three-game Conference USA baseball series from the Thundering Herd on Saturday at USM's Pete Taylor Park with a strong offensive performance.
Marshall (19-25 overall, 4-12 Conference USA) started the game off in fine fashion building a 3-2 lead through three innings. Thundering Herd right fielder Nate Lape led the game off with a double and later scored on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Brandon Casamassima.
Trailing, 2-1 in the top of the third inning Marshall manufactured a pair of runs to regain the lead. With one out in the inning, rightfielder Jeff Rowley singled to left center. Casamassima then ripped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third for Marshall. The Herd's Brendan Murphy then hit a grounder to third base and a throwing error allowed Rowley to score and put Murphy on first with Casamassima advancing to third. The error tied the game at 2-2 and Marshall's Brit Vincent broke the tie with an RBI bunt single.
With Marshall leading 3-2, Southern Miss erupted for six runs in the bottom half of both the fourth and fifth innings. USM then added runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to post an 18-3 win in seven innings.
Southern Miss junior designated hitter Trey Cuevas connected on a three-run homer in the fourth and USM catcher Keith Winstead added a two-run double to take control of the game. The Golden Eagles then used a Trey Sutton leadoff home run to start a six-run fifth inning and help the Eagles cruise to their second win in as many days against Marshall.
USM's Barry Bowden (6-3) recorded the win after working six-innings and striking out six, while Marshall's Andrew Blain (4-2) took the loss.
Marshall will look to salvage game three of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET). The Thundering Herd will look to righthander Jeremy Slone (3-2, 5.15 ERA), while USM is scheduled to counter with righthander David Clark (5-4, 5.49 ERA).
