IRVING, Texas - Conference USA announced its preseason soccer awards and polls Wednesday and senior defensemen Jeff Lenix (Westerville, Ohio) was named to the preseason all-conference team as voted on by the league's nine coaches.
"Jeff Lenix has been the heart of our defense for the past three years and we are happy that his untiring work ethic and tenacity on the field has been recognized by the league coaches, head coach Bob Gray said. "We look forward to Jeff leading our back four again this year."
Lenix, who was named to his second consecutive Second Team All-Conference team in 2006, has played in all of Marshall's 54 games in the past three years. Lenix began his Thundering Herd career as a forward and recorded two goals with three assists during his first campaign. He adjusted quickly to his new defensive role midway through his sophomore season and was recognized with his first second-team accolade.
Lenix and the rest of the Thundering Herd look to improve on last year's 4-10-2 mark as the team prepares for its first exhibition match against Rio Grande, Saturday, August, 18 at 4 p.m. in Rio Grande, Ohio.
SMU, who spent the majority of the 2006 season as the No. 1 team in the nation and is the defending C-USA champion, has been selected by the league's coaches as the preseason favorite to repeat as the 2007 Conference USA Men's Soccer Champion. Mustang junior midfielder Bruno Guarda, the 2006 C-USA Player of the Year, and Kentucky senior Nathan Marks have been named the Preseason C-USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.
