HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University senior outside hitter Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.) tallied a match-high 15 kills to help lift the Herd to a 3-1 (30-25, 30-20, 28-30, 30-20) win over Glenville State College in Tuesday night's non-conference home opener in front of 322 people at the Cam Henderson Center.
With the win, Marshall improves to 2-2 overall, while Glenville State falls to 0-5 overall.
Marshall jumped to a two-games-to-none lead over the Pioneers behind a six-kill effort in game one from senior outside hitter Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) and a four-kill effort from sophomore outside hitter Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) in game two.
Glenville State fought back from a 28-24 deficit in the third frame, scoring six consecutive points to record a 30-28 win, receiving a kill apiece from junior middle hitter Camai Roberson (Glenville, W.Va.) and junior outside hitter Meagan Monk (Baytown, Texas). The Pioneers also received a service ace from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Saelens (Grand Rapids, Mi.).
Cahill notched five kills in the fourth game and senior middle hitter Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.) added four kills to seal the victory for the Herd.
The Herd had three players record double-digit kills as Billingy finished with 14 and Ndubisi 10 to go along with Cahill's 15.
Herd Freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) finished with 49 assists and junior defensive specialist Taylor Tanner (Union, Ky.) added 11 digs in the win for Marshall.
"We still have a lot of work to do," head coach Mitch Jacobs said following the Herd's second win of the season.
The Herd returns to non-conference action when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Western Kentucky Tournament this weekend. Marshall will square off against Gardner-Webb, Friday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, will face Tennessee State at 12:30 p.m. and will play host Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. Photos from tonight's match can be found on www.HerdZone.com.
