DOVER, Del. - The Marshall women's soccer team shutout Delaware State University, 3-0, in Friday evening's non-conference match at Alumni Stadium. With the win, Marshall begins its season 1-0 while Delaware State falls to 0-1.
"We scored early which put us in a state of complacency," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "I give credit to Delaware state because they worked hard but we are returning home with a win."
Marshall junior Jessica Jennings (Dayton, Ohio) put the Herd on the board early as she out maneuvered the Hornet's goalkeeper Courtney Haas off a free kick in the first minute of action.
Senior Mollie Lee (Leawood, Kan.) scored the Herd's second goal in the 35th minute as she drilled a shot 12 yards out from a Ali Lizotte (Iron Station, N.C.) pass.
In the 84th, junior Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) received a pass from senior Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.) to clinch the Marshall victory.
The Herd out shot the Hornets 21 to 8, with 8 of the Herd's shots being placed on goal.
The Marshall women's soccer team will travel to Washington, D.C. to face George Washington University on Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
