HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University men's soccer team is hosting the Marshall Classic, which begins Friday, Sept. 21 and concludes Sunday, Sept. 23. The classic includes High Point, Western Kentucky, Xavier and Marshall.
Marshall's Sterling Flunder, JD Hill (Columbus, Ohio) and Jermaine Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica) were honored for their play at the Hilltopper Classic with all-tournament team accolades. Flunder recorded two goals in Friday's overtime loss against Belmont. Johnson tallied two goals and an assist in a 5-2 victory over Centenary, while Hill chipped in with an assist.
Junior goalie Brad Kennedy (Lewisburg, W.Va.) recorded his 25th save of this season, which places him third in Conference USA with 5.0 saves per game. Freshman Adam Greene (Knoxville, Tenn.) made his college debut in the second half of the win over Centenary. Greene recorded his first collegiate save in 39 minutes of action.
The Thundering Herd's opening round match is against Xavier. The two schools have battled six times in a series that dates back to 1985, with Xavier leading 3-2-1. The Atlantic-10 member is 3-3-0 this season and just snapped a three-game losing streak. Xavier started its 2007 campaign with victories over UNLV and UC Davis. However, the Musketeers lost their next three games before defeating IUPUI, 5-0.
Marshall matches up against Western Kentucky in the classic finale, Sunday. Western Kentucky split at last weekend's Hilltopper Classic with a victory over Centenary and a loss against Belmont. The Hilltoppers are 1-3-2 this season and are averaging 36 shots half, but have only managed to score three times. Western Kentucky plays High Point in Friday's opener.
The High Point Panthers, the only team Marshall will not face at the classic, has a winless record of 0-5-1 and are currently riding a five-match losing streak. The Panther's tie came against Gardener-Webb in their opener.
Admission to the classic is free. Game Tracker will be available on www.herdzone.com. Marshall's games can be heard live on the radio at Tri-State 88.1 fm or on the internet at www.marshall.edu/wmul/.
