HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University men's soccer team fell 4-1 in its season home opener against Louisville in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field.
The loss dropped the Thundering Herd to 1-2 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 3-1 overall. Louisville evened the all-time series with Marshall at four games apiece.
The Herd wasted no time on offense as junior midfielder Dana Heimbecker (Niagara Falls, Ont.) received a through ball from teammate Osric Flores (Everett, Wash.) and drove a shot from outside the 18-yard box past a diving David Simolike in the 2nd minute of the game to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.
Louisville took advantage of playing 11-10 man soccer, when Gerardo Chavez scored off a Marco Terminesi shot deflection that was initially saved by Marshall keeper Brad Kennedy (Lewisburg, W.Va.).
The Cardinals eventually captured the lead seven minutes before halftime as Aaron Clapham was on the receiving end of another Louisville shot that was saved by Kennedy, but was deflected to Clapham, who put the shot away to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead midway through the match.
With the playing field even at 10 players each in the second frame, Louisville received a pair of goals from Terminesi to secure the victory. Terminesi's first goal was taken outside the 18-yard box after dribbling to his right and beat a diving Kennedy. Two minutes later, Terminesi hit the other side of the goal from a pass from Gerardo Chavez.
Marshall returns to action Friday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. when it takes on Belmont at Bowling Green, Ky., to take part in the Fairfield Inn-Bowling Green Hilltopper Classic. The Herd concludes the classic against Centenary, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
