HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team will host its second annual Spring Training Banquet Thursday, Jan. 24 in the Don Morris Room of the Marshall Student Center starting at 7 p.m.

This year's guest speaker will be pitching coach John Farrell of the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox.

Individual tickets for Dugout Club members will be available for $40 and non-Dugout Club member tickets will be sold for $50. Corporate tables (eight tickets) will be sold for $500, which includes a pre-reception with Farrell at 6:00 p.m.

John's son Shane is a freshman at Marshall who will look to add depth to the Herd's pitching staff in 2008.

Farrell's professional playing career began when he was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 1984 First-Year Player Draft after an outstanding career at Oklahoma State University. His major league career resulted in a 4.56 ERA and a 36-46 record with stints in the Indians, Angels and Tigers organizations.

After his retirement as an active player, he served as an assistant coach/pitching and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State from 1997-2001 and helped guide the Cowboys to a College World Series berth in 1999 in Omaha, Neb.

Farrell mentored 14 pitchers that were drafted or signed as non-drafted free agents at the professional level, including right-hander Scott Williamson, who earned National League Rookie of the Year honors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1999.

Since 2001, he has served as the Cleveland Indians Director of Player Development. Under Farrell's tutelage, the Indians were named "Organization of the Year" in consecutive seasons (2003-04) by USA Today's Sports Weekly, and were named by Baseball America as having the number one farm system in professional baseball in 2003.
