Volleyball Set To Compete At C-USA Tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Marshall University volleyball squad takes to the road to compete at the Conference USA volleyball tournament hosted by Memphis, beginning Thursday, Nov. 20. First-serve is slated for 6:00 p.m. ET and will feature the tenth-seeded Thundering Herd in a showdown with No. 7 Southern Miss.

Marshall enters tournament action having finished the season 12-14 overall, 5-11 in C-USA play, while Southern Miss concluded regular season competition 17-12 overall, 7-9 in league action.

Southern Miss swept the regular season series with Marshall with a 3-2 victory on Oct. 5 in Hattiesburg, Miss. and a 3-1 win in Huntington on Nov. 9. The Herd now has a 5-3 lead in the all-time series, dating back to 2005.

In the first meeting, Ashley Petrinec led all attackers with 16 kills, while Angela Hlavaty followed with 15 blasts. Sarah Jane Bowden and Lauren Sears added 11 and 10 kill respectively, while Kelsea Seymour handed out 56 assists. Maia Ivanova tied for a match-high in digs with 20, while Petrinec and Hlavaty chipped in 10 each to lead the defensive effort for the Golden Eagles.

Marshall received a team-high 14 kill effort from Elizabeth Herman (Dunwoody, Ga.), while Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad), Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.) and Cameron Yoho (Sistersville, W.Va.) notched double-digit kills with 12, 11 and 10 kills respectively. The Herd also had five players reach double-digits in digs, led by Carlson's 20. Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) dug 12 balls and Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) added 11, while Taylor Tanner (Union, Ky.) and Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) provided 10 apiece. Fleming also distributed 54 assists and seven kills in the losing effort.

The second match saw Stevi Cherry drill a match-best 13 kills, while Hlavaty downed 11. Ivanova paced the defense with 14 digs, while Petrinec and Seymour added 13 and 10 digs respectively.

Ross terminated a team-high 11 kills and added 10 total blocks (1 solo, 9 assisted), while Carlson recorded a match-high 17 digs. Marcum hustled for four kills and added 10 digs in the loss.

If Marshall defeats Southern Miss in the first round of the tournament, it will face No. 2 UAB at 6:00 p.m. ET, on Friday, Nov. 21. The complete tournament bracket is as follows.
