MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Marshall University senior middle hitter Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad) and sophomore setter Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) garnered Conference USA volleyball honors as announced by the league office, Wednesday.
Ross, the nation's eighth best attacker (.414 hitting efficiency), was selected to the All-C-USA First Team as voted upon by the conference coaches. Fleming earned a spot on the C-USA All-Academic squad as selected by the member Sports Information Directors.
"It was great that Jalicia was recognized for her performance this year," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "The team had a tough year, but for her to be recognized for effort this season is a great achievement."
Ross finished regular season action with 272 kills and a .414 hitting percentage that ranked eighth in the country and second best in C-USA. Ross also led the team in blocks, totaling 87 (9 solo, 78 assisted) during her senior season for the Thundering Herd. She drilled a career-high 20 kills against UAB on Sept. 28 and registered double-digit kills in 15 matches during the 2008 season.
Ross also collected a career-best 11 total blocks (2 solo, 9 assisted) against UCF on Nov. 7, and followed that performance with 10 total blocks (1 solo, 9 assisted) versus Southern Miss on Nov. 9, and on Oct. 17 at UTEP she became the first Marshall player since Nickie Sanlin in 2005 to hit at a staggering .800 clip (16K 0E, 20TA).
Fleming, a 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-District II Second Team selection, earned a spot on the C-USA All-Academic team.
