White Sweeps Green, 3-0 In Volleyball Scrimmage

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Megan Carlson blasted 14 kills and added six digs to help lead the White squad to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) sweep over the Green team in Thursday afternoon's Thundering Herd volleyball scrimmage at the Cam Henderson Center.
As of the 2008 season, the term "game" will be changed to "set" and instead of playing each set to 30 points, sets one through four will now be played to 25, with the 15-point fifth set remaining as is.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the third set, the Green squad pulled to within one at 20-19, but a pair of kills from Layne Kehl, a kill from Elizabeth Fleming and a service ace by Jessica Dhoore sealed the set and the match for the White.
In set one, the sides fought to eight ties before the White squad broke a 20-20 deadlock, scoring the final five points on the strength of two kills by Carlson and one from Kelley Bugler. The Green received four of Jalicia Ross' seven kills in the set, while newcomers Meredith O'Malley and Susan Waldie added a kill apiece in the frame.
After falling behind 14-9 in the second set, the Green used a 7-2 run to knot the set at 16-16 before evening the set again at 19-19. Carlson, Fleming, Bugler and Elizabeth Herman each notched kills to help seal a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead for the White squad.
Herman finished with 12 kills and eight digs for the White squad, while Dhoore added a match-high 14 digs a pair of assists for the White, while Fleming dished out 38 helpers and recorded a pair of block assists.
Kristin Marcum totaled a team-high 13 digs for the Green, while Taylor Tanner contributed 11. Head coach Mitch Jacobs, who was setting for the Green, handed out 19 assists and registered 10 kills.
The Herd will continue its summer practices, and will conduct a second scrimmage Friday, Aug. 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the Henderson Center. Marshall will then conclude its summer practice schedule with the annual Green/White scrimmage, Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the Henderson Center.
