HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University junior Emily Sullivan blasted 13 kills and record three assisted blocks to lift the Green team to a three-set sweep of the White squad (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) in Wednesday evening's intra-squad volleyball match at the Cam Henderson Center.
"I thought our first team (Green) played well in all aspects of the game," head coach Mitch Jacobs said following the match. "Of course Ellen Hayes played a starring role on defense again, but Jessica Dhoore played her best match to date. She was very noticeable on the floor."
After taking a two-set lead, the Green raced out to a 10-3 lead in the third frame behind a pair of service aces from sophomore Kristin Marcum, a pair of kills by Sullivan, and a kill apiece from senior Jalicia Ross and sophomore Kelley Bugler. The White fought to within two, bringing the score to 14-12, but the Green ended the contest on an 11-5 run highlighted by three more kills from Sullivan.
"Emily and Kristin certainly played very well, and I hope Jalicia can continue to be a big force for us at the net," Jacobs added.
Marcum finished with seven kills and added 11 digs and three solo blocks, while Ross also registered seven kills on 11 swings for a .636 hitting percentage. Dhoore dug 11 balls for the Green while sophomore Elizabeth Fleming handed out 31 assists.
Freshman Megan Carlson notched five kills, while senior Taylor Tanner picked up nine digs for the White. Jacobs led the squad with 15 assists and nine digs, while assistant coach Patrick Nicholas chipped in nine kills. Assistant coach Ellen Hayes added a match-high 16 digs on the night for the White. Freshman Meredith O'Malley recorded five assisted blocks, while Jacobs added three. Sophomore Layne Kehl and freshman Cameron Yoho added a pair of assisted blocks in the match.
"I think we've seen enough good things happening, and I hope we can continue to play hard heading into the regular season," Jacobs stated. "That would be great to see."
