HOUSTON - Marshall University's Kristin Smith scored 3,699 points to claim the Conference USA Championship in the Indoor Pentathlon Friday at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse. In the process, she became the first Marshall student-athlete to win an event at the Conference USA Indoor or Outdoor Championships.
"This is an amazing feat and I am so proud of her," Marshall Track and Field Coach Jeff Small said. "Krisitin has trained so hard and is a great all-around athlete and person. I am really excited for her and I cannot say enough about her. Coach McBride (Keith) and Cowan (Rod) did a great job in preparing her."
Smith, a sophomore from Baltimore, Md., came just one point away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships with her school-record performance. She finished the 60-meter hurdles in 9.05 seconds (3rd in the event), set a Marshall record with a 5-foot-08.75-inch high jump (1st in the event), recorded a throw of 33-feet, two inches in the shot put (6th in the event), jumped a distance of 17-08.25 in the long jump (5th), and recorded a time of 2:31.19 in the 800 meter run (5th).
Smith was a second-team all-conference pick last outdoor season after she finished second in the high jump at the 2008 C-USA Championships.
