HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Marshall University sophomore infielder Victor Gomez earned All-Conference USA First-Team honors and junior right-handed pitcher Dan Straily was named to the All-C-USA Second-Team as announced by the league office, Tuesday.
Each postseason team, along with the individual awards were voted upon by a panel consisting of each team's head coach, sports information director and a media member from each city.
Gomez, Marshall's leader in almost every offensive category, enters conference tournament action batting .329 with 69 hits, highlighted by 13 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. His 18 long balls places him first among conference hitters and his 62 RBIs is third best among the league's top batters. The Miami, Fla. native is hitting at an impressive .364 clip in league action and his .808 slugging percentage and 34 RBIs ranks first against conference competition.
Straily is 4-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 12 games and 70 innings pitched through regular-season action. He has fanned 57 batters, 39 of which have come in conference play. That number ranks him sixth among the league's top pitchers. The Springfield, Ore. native has a 3-2 record in C-USA games to go along with a 3.94 ERA which ranks among the top 10 in the conference.
Last season, Gomez was named to the All-C-USA second team and the C-USA All-Freshman team, while Straily earned a spot on the 2008 Entergy Conference USA Baseball All-Tournament Team.
