HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall volleyball team opens the 2009 season with a trip to Hempstead, N.Y., to take part in the Hofstra/Asics Invitational. The Herd will compete against Binghamton on Friday at 4:30 p.m. along with a doubleheader on Saturday against Rhode Island and tournament host Hofstra at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
It marks the first ever meeting between Marshall and all three opponents in the tournament. Binghamton finished America East runners up in 2008 and returns five starters from a year ago. Three of the starters were named first-team all-conference as the Bearcats ended with a 16-15 overall record, 9-3 in conference play.
Rhode Island finished last season with a 14-14 record, 5-8 in Atlantic 10 conference action. The Rams bring back five starters and finished the season in fourth place in the West Division.
In 2008, Hofstra owned a record of 18-14 and 9-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride advanced to the semifinals of the CAA tournament before being bounced by top-seeded Northeastern.
Marshall returns four starters from last season in seniors Emily Sullivan and Kristin Marcum and juniors Elizabeth Herman and Elizabeth Fleming. Sullivan, an outside hitter, is the top returner in kills from the 2008 season with 284. Fleming enters her third season as the starting setter and was named to the 2009 Conference USA Preseason Team. She finished her sophomore season ranked third in C-USA in assists-per-set (10.70).
Following the tournament, the Herd will head home to host the University of Charleston on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center.
