HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Marshall University volleyball team defeated Davidson, 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 28-30, 25-20), on Saturday afternoon at the Millis Center in the team's first match of the High Point University Classic in High Point, N.C.
MU is now 5-0 on the season, and the victory marked the 150th for head coach Mitch Jacobs at Marshall. His record is 150-81 in his eighth seasons at the helm of the Herd.
Davidson falls to 1-5, earning its first victory of the season in a match against High Point early in the day.
"We were very tested today by Davidson," Jacobs said. "Their record is not indicative of their team because they were playing without a true setter before today. Earlier in the day they knocked off High Point and we all realized from the first serve of the match that they were very different from the team we saw on tape from their previous weekend."
MU was in control in the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-19 and 25-18. The third set was the most challenging for the Herd on the afternoon. In the set the score was tied at 24, 25, 26 and 27-all before the Wildcats pulled away with a two-point win, 30-28.
The Herd bounced back in the fourth set, taking the frame 25-20, and the match to stay undefeated on the season. Kristin Marcum tallied six of her match-high 15 kills in set, along with registering half her digs, six of 12, in the final set.
"I'm proud at the way our girls were able to brush off some mistakes that led to losing game three and come back very strong to take game four and the match," Jacobs said. "Ball control was key for us tonight as we stayed in system most of the match."
Marcum tallied a double-double, 15 kills and 12 digs to lead the MU offense. Elizabeth Herman, Emily Sullivan and Katy Schad all reached double-digits in kills with 11, 10 and 10 respectively.
Cameron Yoho totaled two solo blocks and four block assists to go along with her three kills to help control the net for the Herd.
"Kristin (Marcum) and Emily (Sullivan) were really good all match offensively and Cameron Yoho was awesome defending the net," Jacobs said. "All-in-all we kept playing hard and I continue to be really excited at the way this team fights."
Elizabeth Fleming dished out a match-best 45 assists, while Ryanne Milligan helped run the defense with a match-high 19 digs.
MU will play in a doubleheader tomorrow against Charlotte and tournament-host High Point at 2 and 7 p.m. respectively.
