HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the second-straight match senior Elizabeth Herman topped the 25 kill mark, but unfortunately it came in a losing effort as Marshall University dropped a Conference USA contest on the road to Southern Miss in five sets, 3-2 (25-22, 25-28, 20-25, 19-25, 11-15) on Friday night.
Marshall (9-12, 3-6 C-USA) captured the first two stanzas before Southern Miss (12-9, 5-5 C-USA) rallied to win the next three sets to earn the victory. The game featured a total of 33 ties and 10 lead changes, with the Golden Eagles prevailing with the four-point edge in the deciding set.
"We played against a very experienced team and had a great start," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We let them off the hook by losing our focus in game three and after that it felt like we were swimming against the currant."
Herman finished the evening with 25 kills to lead all players in the match. She is just the second player in C-USA to post two matches of 25-or-more kills in a match this season. She added four total blocks and three digs to her stat line.
"Herman was fantastic again tonight," Jacobs said. "We are getting closer to finishing."
Classmate Elizabeth Fleming posted her ninth double-double of the season, ending the night with 56 assists and 19 digs, both season-high totals for the South Bend, Ind., native.
Juniors Kelley Bugler and Cameron Yoho each surpassed the 10-kill plateau. Bugler posted a .348 (10K-2E-23TA) hitting clip and seven block assists, while Yoho finished with 12 spikes.
The Golden Eagles were led by Ashley Mell's 21 kills and setter Kelsea Seymour who dished out 58 assists. Four players finished in double digit kills, led by Halie Ecker with 23.
