NEW ORLEANS - Abby Tomas and Elizabeth Herman combine for 39 kills, while Elizabeth Fleming posted her 10th double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as Tulane University outlasted the Marshall University volleyball team, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25, 9-15) on Saturday evening at Fogelman Arena.
Marshall (9-13, 3-7 C-USA) competed in it's seventh match of the season that required a deciding set. Herman led all attackers with 21 spikes, while Tomas tied a career-high with 18 kills of her own. Tomas also finished with a .385 attacking percentage.
"Tonight we lost a match that we were thoroughly dominating," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "In games one, three and four we were having our way. Then within a series of our plays our momentum was gone. We got lit up for a six or seven point service run and a string of hitting errors. We are better than our record, but we have to recognize how important momentum is!"
Fleming ended with match-highs in assists (44) and digs (17) at the setter position. Katy Schad chipped in with 13 digs, while Ryanne Milligan added 11.
The Herd produced strong hitting performances in the first (.321) and third (.387) sets. Unfortunately, MU struggled to connect offensively in the fourth and fifth sets, being held under .100 in both frames.
Tulane (7-16, 4-7 C-USA) was led by Izabela Grot's 17 kills, while Nikki Osuna topped the Green Wave with 15 digs.
"There is no doubt that I am at the most challenging point of my career," Jacobs said. "This is unacceptable for our program and I take full responsibility. We have a young and talented team and we are going to get this turned around."
Next Marshall Match: The Herd hosts C-USA opponent Houston on Fri., Oct. 29th at the Cam Henderson Center, with first serve at 7 p.m. EST.
