White Team Captures Marshall Baseball World Series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball White Team took three-of-four games over the weekend to capture the annual Green and White World Series to conclude the Fall season. Senior Ben Jurevicius earned MVP honors, while senior Shane Farrell earned the Cy Young award. The White team won five of the seven games played during the series.

White Team
Offense
During the course of the series the White Team hit an impressive .325 as squad (78-for-240) with 18 extra base hits and 15 stolen bases.

MVP Ben Jurevicius produced an outstanding series at the dish, registering a .500 batting average (13-for-26). The senior outfielder knocked in eight runs, scored seven times and clubbed three triples and three doubles over the seven games.

Freshman Louie Helmburg shined behind the plate for the White Team, posting a .450 (9-for-20) average with three doubles and five RBI. The Nicholasville, Ky., native was also hit by a pitch five times and scored four runs.

Other offensive standouts included Felix Marte (9-for-23; .391), Kenny Socorro (8-for-21; .380), Isaac Ballou (10-for-27; .370) and Victor Gomez (10-for-31; .322). V. Gomez and Ballou tied for with a series-best 10 hits apiece. V. Gomez also knocked in 10 runs, while Ballou walked seven times and stole five bases, all tops in the series.

Pitching
The White Team produced a team ERA of 4.14, led by Cy Young winner Shane Farrell. The righty fired 7.2 innings during the course of the series, surrendering just four hits and one earned run en route to a 1.17 ERA.

Freshmen Ryan Butler and Austin Pratt pitched well off the mound. Butler went 8.2 frames, allowing just six hits and two earned runs while punching out seven. Pratt worked 8.1 innings, giving up just three earned runs and tied Butler with a series-high seven strikeouts.

Green Team
Offense
Thor Meeks and Nathan Gomez were the primary offensive weapons for the Green Team. Meeks went 7-for-21 (.333) at the dish, including a homer, two RBI and scored three times. N. Gomez laced six hits, two doubles, one homer and three RBI.

Pitching
Josh King chucked 8.1 innings on the bump and allowed just one earned to cross home. The right-hander accumulated a miniscule 1.08 ERA, giving up eight hits and striking out one. Erin McGee also did a solid job on the hill, giving up three earned runs over 7.2 innings for a 3.52 ERA with four punch outs.
