HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's soccer battles for the sixth and final Conference USA tournament berth as the Thundering Herd hosts East Carolina in its regular season finale on Thursday night at Sam Hood Field.
MU seeks revenge against the Pirates who knocked the Herd out of playoff contention last season. A Marshall victory verse ECU and a UAB tie or loss will send the Thundering Herd to UCF for its first-ever C-USA tournament.
The Herd stands at 6-8-3, 4-5-1 following a weekend sweep, defeating Colorado College 2-1 and UTEP 3-0 in crucial C-USA matchups. Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) tallied three goals and two assists to earn C-USA Offensive Player of the week honors. Duncan's game-winner on Sunday helped her to surpass Amanda McMahon as Marshall's all-time leading scorer with 27 career goals.
Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) added two goals and two assists in the victories. DeSumma and Duncan combined for all 14 of the Herd's points on the weekend.
Goalkeeper Lexa Hughes (Everett, Wash.) tallied a career-high nine saves in the match against the Tigers and tallied Marshall's sixth shutout of the season on Sunday against the Miners.
East Carolina's won two of its last three to remain in playoff contention. The Pirates defeated UTEP 1-0 on Friday night with the lone goal of the contest coming at the 7:07 mark from Leah Bagonis for her first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Christian Cordero registered nine saves on the night.
Amanda Malkiewicz scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give East Carolina the early lead Sunday but the Pirates were unable to hang on as it allowed three straight goals and fell 3-2 to Colorado College.
The Herd enjoys a 5-1 record at Sam Hood Field this season but will need its first-ever victory against ECU in five tries.
