HUNTINGTON, W.Va . - A pair of second half goals was too much for the Marshall women's soccer team to overcome as SMU defeated the Herd 2-0 in Sunday afternoon's Conference USA match at Sam Hood Field.
"We didn't take care of the ball today and that's not something we can afford to do," head coach Kevin Long said. "Today was a missed opportunity to move ourselves up to the top of the conference."
MU falls to 4-5-2, 2-2-0 C-USA, while the Mustangs improve to 7-4-2, 2-2-0 C-USA on the season.
SMU's Kaitlyn Eidson tallied her first goal of the season, the game-winner, in the 70th minute. A cross by Shelby Hartweck made its way through the crowd to find Eidson who finished into the center of the net.
The Thundering Herd had a chance to tie, as Erika Duncan had her second penalty kick in as many games. Duncan tallied the game-winner on a penalty kick on Friday night, but was unable to capitalize as Courtney Webb snagged one of her four saves on the afternoon.
Hartweck would add some insurance for the Mustangs, scoring in the 82nd minute to close the door on the Herd.
Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied a game-high five shots in the contest, jumping her season total to 34.
The Herd returns to action on Oct. 8th, when it travels to UAB, to begin a four-game road trip.
