EL PASO, Texas - The Marshall University volleyball team dropped a match against Conference USA opponent UTEP, 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 19-25) on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The loss drops Marshall to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in C-USA and will look to avenge the loss with a rematch against the Miners, Saturday at 5 p.m. EST. UTEP ups its record to 11-7 and 3-2 in league action.
"We can't go on the road and play no defense and expect to win," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Tonight was very similar to other games we have played on the road this season. We've got to figure some things out and get some fixes in before tomorrow night."
Elizabeth Herman led the Herd with 15 kills on the evening, including eight in the opening stanza. Marshall managed to hit just .122 (15K-10E-41TA) in the first set and .183 (46K-24E-120TA) for the night.
Another potent offensive weapon was Cameron Yoho. The Sistersville, W.Va., native slammed down 13 spikes on 30 attempts with only two errors for a .367 hitting percentage. The middle blocker added three block assists to her stat line for the evening. Kelley Bugler chipped in with eight kills of her own.
At the setter position, Elizabeth Fleming dished out 40 helpers. It marked the 10th time she has reached the 40-assist plateau on the season.
UTEP received a balanced scoring attack, as five players recorded six-or-more kills on the night. Bridget Logan was the top producer offensively for the Miners, posting 12 kills on 21 swings with two errors for a .476 hitting clip.
The first two stanzas featured a total of 26 ties and 13 lead changes, but the Miners were able to edge the Herd in the first two frames and take the third set for the three-game sweep.
