HURRICANE, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team hosted another successful golf tournament to raise funds for the upcoming 2011 season. It marked the 16th fund raising tournament that the baseball team has hosted and this year a total of 28 teams of four players competed.

"It was a great turnout for the tournament and a perfect day," head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "I really appreciate all the help from volunteers and the Sleepy Hollow Country Club was a gracious host for the event."

The winning foursome consisted of Paul Farrell, Bert Ketchum, Corky Hammers and Scott McClure.

Prior to the start of the golf outing, Waggoner and the rest of the Thundering Herd baseball community recognized recent retired assistant coach George Brumfield and 2010 MLB draft pick Kevin Shackelford.

Brumfield served as a volunteer assistant coach on Waggoner's staff for four seasons, while Shackelford served as a catcher for two seasons before pitching during his junior campaign. The Charlotte, N.C., native was selected in the 21st round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

"George has been on the coaching staff for all four years I have been here at Marshall and his presence in the dugout will be missed. He was a big part of the team and has a great baseball mind.

"Kevin has a very bright future with the Brewers. He steadily improved all throughout last year and his numbers in rookie ball were impressive."

Marshall opens its season on at the College of Charleston Tournament against Miami (Ohio) on Feb. 18.
