Baseball Begins Annual Herd Challenge

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team will compete in its fourth annual Herd Challenge from Monday, Nov. 29 through Wednesday, Dec. 1 at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The three-day event will consist of events that the players will compete in as individuals and small groups, testing their physical fitness, endurance and strength.
Junior Rhett Stafford will look to retain his title after taking home the Herd Challenge trophy in 2009 by compiling 63 total points. He edged now seniors Ian Kadish (58 points) and Arik Sikula (50 points), who finished second and third, respectively.
Below is a list of the events that will take place over the three-day event.
Day 1: November 29
1. 480-Yard Run
2. Pro-Agility Test
3. Medicine Ball Throw
4. 60-Yard Dash
5. Timed Home to First Run
6. Team Challenge: Timed Dump Truck Push
Day 2: November 30
1. Jacobs Ladder: Most feet climbed in one minute
2. Plate Pinch
3. Bat Speed/Broad Jump
4. Vertical Jump
5. Swimming
6. Team Challenge: Timed sled push in teams of two
Day 3: December 1
Gauntlet
The most grueling of all the tests, the Gauntlet is a timed event consisting of a number of events. Each student-athlete will start with a distance run, followed by pushing a 100 pound plate across the football field. After crossing the goal line, the player must run up a side of the stadium and back down before flipping a tractor tire 15 total yards. Next is the farmers walk with thick grips, which are carried 30 yards to the 50-yard line. The event is concluded by running from the 50-yard line up the side ramp out of the stadium.
