HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Alfredo Brito went 3-for-4 and launched his first collegiate home run, but Le Moyne scored a run in the eighth to break a tie score and defeat the Marshall University baseball team, 5-4 at the Kennedy Center on Friday afternoon.
Kurt Lipton and James Lavinskas each collected a pair of hits as the team tallied 10 base knocks as a dropped to 7-7 on the season. The win ups the Dolphins to 6-10 on the year.
Herd starter Ian Kadish was extremely effective after the first inning. The righty allowed only two hits beyond the first, working a career-high 6.2 frames with five strikeouts and did not figure in the decision.
Tyler Gatrell (0-1) was saddled with the loss out of the Herd bullpen. The right-hander worked 2.0 innings allowing one unearned run.
The Dolphins splashed the scoreboard in the top of the first scoring three times. The first two batters reached base via base hits before Kadish appeared to escape the early Le Moyne offensive opportunity with the help of a double play. Sean Paino lined a two-run double, followed by a ground-aided RBI triple from Don Schaaf to hold a 3-0 lead.
MU made its first mark on the scoreboard when Brito connected on the first pitch of the third inning for a solo bomb. Lipton came around and scored later in the inning on a RBI groundout by Eric Semeniuk to get within a run, 3-2.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Schaaf added another run for the Dolphins, to hold a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.
In the last of the seventh, Brito, Victor Gomez and Lipton each collected consecutive hits against the LM staff. Brito touched home on Lipton's base hit, while V.Gomez scampered to the plate on a wild pitch to even the score, 4-4.
The Dolphins scored what ended up being the game winner in the eighth. Matt Marra drew a walk and moved into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt. On a ball in the dirt, Marra attempted to make it to third base. Herd catcher V.Gomez tried to throw out the runner at the third, but the ball sunk into the dirt and made its way to the outfield, allowing Marra to come home for the Dolphins fifth run.
The Herd made some noise in the ninth, but came up short as MU stranded two runners and Erik Lambe earned his first save of the season.
LM reliever Luke Nellis (1-0) earned the victory, tossing an inning out of the bullpen.
MU hosts Le Moyne again tomorrow at the Kennedy Center in a doubleheader with first pitch slated for noon.
