HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Le Moyne College, 12-3 and 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Kennedy Center. The Thundering Herd drops to 7-9 overall, while the Dolphins improve to 8-10.
Game 1: Le Moyne 12, Marshall 3
Junior Kenny Socorro was a perfect 4-for-4, tying a career-high for hits in a game and played flawless defense at shortstop, but the Dolphins totaled 14 hits scoring four runs in the fifth and eighth innings to knock off MU, 12-3.
Victor Gomez and Thor Meeks each connected for round trippers, but two big innings from the Le Moyne offense made for an insurmountable comeback.
Shane Farrell (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound for the Herd. The junior worked 5.0 frames allowing five earned runs on six hits with a strikeout.
Cory Nelson (1-1) earned his first victory of the year, firing 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts.
Game 2: Le Moyne 7, Marshall 2
Victor Gomez went 2-for-4 with a high towering solo moon shot in the third, but a four-run third sank the Herd in game two of the doubleheader, 7-2.
LM starter Mark Kuzma fired a complete 7.0 inning game, surrendering just one earned run on seven hits with a total of 10 punch-outs. The southpaw kept the Herd batters off balance all day to earn the victory.
Lefty Mike Mason (2-2) worked into the third before being pulled in favor of reliever James White III.
Kirby Pellant slapped a pair of hits, including a double, while Justin Maynard collected his first collegiate hit.
The Herd looks to avoid the four-game sweep tomorrow, with first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
