HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team plated eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks in part to a bases clearing double from Victor Gomez and a pinch-hit two-run double from Alfredo Brito to send the Thundering Herd past Ohio University, 10-4 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Kennedy Center.
MU now sits at 9-10 on the season with OU falling to 2-15.
V. Gomez finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI; both of his doubles came in the eight-run fourth. Younger brother Nathan Gomez picked up a RBI double as a replacement later in the game as a total of 11 different players collected a base hit on the day.
Ben Frith (1-0) earned the victory out of the Herd bullpen, chucking 4.0 innings. The sophomore southpaw allowed only one hit during his four-frame stint, with two walks and two strikeouts. Frith replaced Mike Cavalli, who fired the first 3.0 innings giving up one unearned run with a punch out.
A total of five MU pitchers worked on the afternoon, combining to allow just five Bobcat hits.
OU's Nick Egan (0-1) was saddled with the defeat by giving up five earned runs on five hits in a third of an inning on the mound.
MU opens its Conference USA slate with a three-game series in New Orleans, La., against the Tulane Green Wave. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST.
